Football4Profit: News- Football

Joey Barton has, somehow, gotten himself another chance with Newcastle United. Despite the player’s violent tendencies, manager Kevin Keegan admitted that the club will give Barton another chance when he is released from prison next week. The midfielder was incarcerated for six months, convicted of assault against two people outside of a McDonald’s restaurant last December in Central Liverpool. His record also has been stained with some outbursts on club grounds- including an assault on a teammate during training, and putting out a cigar in another player’s eye.

Australia’s 34-19 win over New Zealand in Sydney have earned them the top spot as Favourites to Win for the Tri Nations tournament. Five minutes after the halftime, the Wallabies lost the lead they had earned in the first half, and were forced to try to keep up with the All Blacks for the remainder of the game. Australia held fast though, to the credit of Coach Robbie Dean’s five-Test, and the movement of forwards James Horwill and Rocky Elsom, working to hold onto their run of 5 victories and simultaneously earn the top spot for Tri Nations. The Wallabies’ odds have changed, then, from 3/1 to 5/4 by Extrabet, while the All Blacks are up from 11/10 to 7/2. South Africa are on offer at odds 6/4.

Kent’s 14 run win over Essex in the first semi-final has earned them their place in the final for the Twenty20 Cup, and odds of 10/11 place them as the strong favourite. Across the board, the club are odds on as the champions and no better odds can be found than the 10/11 you’ll find at William Hill and Blue Square. If you choose to play against, Durham is sitting with 15/8 odds at Ladbrokes, and BoyleSports has Middlesex at 9/2. The two teams will be playing against at the second semi-final.

St. Helen’s Look Good to Win Challenge Cup
The Saints are enjoying 1/6 odds to win the Challenge up following their win against their rivals the Leeds, 26-16. This win earns them their third successive position at the final. Following Sean Long run over Chris Flannery for the opener just seven minutes into their last game, their chances for a 16th successive League and Cup win jumped sky-high. The semi-final was both fast-paced and rather physical, making the event at Hudderfield’s Galpharm Stadium more exciting than usual. The Saints will prep for the contest against either Hull or Wakefield at Wembley on August 30th, and are enjoying their spot as the definitive favourite to take the Tournament. Hull (13/2) and Wakefield (10/1) will meet to play on Sunday for the second semi-final.

Steve Harmison’s chances of being the top player with Ladbrokes has reached odds of 20/1 for the tournament at Edgbaston, after his recall to the England club before the start of the 3rd test. Harmison has returned in order to add into the mix extra power behind an attack which has gotten 13 wickets in the last 344.3 overs that’ve been passed onto the South Africans in the competitions. The powers that be at England made a strong move following the destruction at Headingley, that left Vaughn’s team down 1-0 with two to play. The Three Lions are sitting at 11/4 odds to win the 3rd Test, while the hosts have 8/1 odds to win the series after the win at Leeds. “Harmison has the ability to be a match winner for England. But all too often in the past he has failed to deliver when it matters,” said Nick Weinberg, a spokesperson for Ladbrokes. South Africa’s odds to win the series are 2/7 while their chances at taking on the unbeatable 2-0 series lead are at 11/8. We’ll also note here that on the homefront, Durham remains the clear favourite at 9/4, though Nottinghamshire’s odds have been cut to 4/1 to earn them a place as joint second favourites after their win over Yorkshire.

Ladbrokes has put out their odds that Michael Phelps will break Mark Spitz’s Olympic Gold Medal record in Bejing at 11/8. On the flipside, they’ve rated the 23 year old at 8/15 odds he will not earn more than Spitz’s seven gold metals. Commentary offered by Nick Weinberg on behalf of Ladbrokes, “There can be no doubt that Phelps is a class act, but we think eight golds may just be beyond him.”

Fleeting Spirit has been taken out of the running for the York event. The ante-post favourite for the Coolmore Nunthorpe had odds as short as 9/2 with William Hill for the Group1 five furlong. The three year old’s most recent start at Ascot resulted in her finishing third at the King’s Stand Stakes. As her trainer’s yard has not been available for training, and has recently undergone a revitalization after the Royal Meeting ended in a virtual shutdown, Noseda has cancelled plans to have Fleeting Spirit run at York. When asked about the decision, Noseda said, “She wasn't right after Royal Ascot and hasn't yet bounced back in a manner in which I'd be happy to start off her preparations for the Nunthorpe. There's no plan. We will give her all the time in the world and she'll show us when she is ready again.” The change means that the winner of Nunthorpe last year, Kingsgate native, will hold their place as market leader with odds of 9/2 with Bet 365. They recently won the Golden Jubilee at the Royal Ascot.

Dale Steyn, South African strike bowler has been eliminated from the Third Test and Stan James has cut England from 10/3 to 11/4 for the upcoming tournament at Edgbaston. South Africa has been consistently in the lead for the 4-match series, and are up 1-0. Their odds have down from 110/10 to 11/8, while the odds for a draw have changed from 6/4 to 11/8.

Since the jump in popularity for Ricky Hatton, there has been a surge of bets in the world of welterweight boxing, but it seems that people are following the boxer as an individual, rather than paying more attention to the division as a whole. According to one bookmaker, this isn’t unusual at all- in that typically speaking, gambling on boxing does tend to follow fighters rather than whole divisions. Contrarily, Coral- who call themselves Europe’s leading gaming operator- have confirmed the theory by stating that the Manchester boxer Ricky Hatton has brought a significant amount of money into the welterweight class, but that the “mass money” follows the fighter only. The public relations director at Coral, Simon Clare, has said that boxing is a very specialized area for sports bettors. His commentary came as part of the PR for the WBA Welterweight Championship fight between Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto. The contest will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, America at the MGM Grand’s Garden Arena.
