Football4Profit: News: Tennis- Grand Slams The top players in the world of tennis are competing at close enough levels that bookmakers are in a tizzy keeping up with who is most likely and least likely to take major titles in the future. Industry leaders Roger Federer and Andy Murray will be the ones to watch for next season’s US Open and Wimbledon. At present, primarily because of his decisive defeat by Roger Federer during the US Open’s final this year, Andy Murray is at 6/4 odds that he’ll not make his Grand Slam goal this year by Totesport. The firm is is offering a few bets on Murray such as 8/1 for him to win Wimbledon next year, and 7/4 to win his first Grand Slam title in 2009. The odds of him not achieving a Grand Slam next year are 2/5. On the overall, Toesport rates acknowledge Murray but doubt now’s the time. A spokesman for Totesport, Paul Petrie, said, “Murray has proved he can compete at the highest level and although we think he will eventually win a Grand Slam, next year may be too soon. It is 1/2 that he fails to make the breakthrough next year.” They’re more hopeful for Federer, naming him the man to beat: “Federer proved in the US Open that when he in on the top of his game he is untouchable and we think he will get his Wimbledon title back from Rafael Nadal.” Federer is at 4/5 odds with Coral to earn the two events next year to surpass Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam titles. Coral’s David Stevens summed it up: “By his own high standards, Roger Federer had suffered a disappointing 2008, but he looked as good as ever in winning a fifth US Open title, and if he takes that form into 2009, overtaking Pete Sampras' total of 14 Grand Slam wins could be a formality. As for Murray, he's clearly not far off winning a big one, but his supporters may have to wait at least one more year for the breakthrough to come.” Stevens concluded. They also claim Federer as favourite with 7/3 odds for winning the 2009 Grand Slam opening event- the Australian Open- while Murray trails at 6/1. It may well be that Totesport and Coral are being generous in Murray’s chances for success. Sky Bet are dubious, offering Murray at 8/11 to reach a Grand Slam final, and 5/2 to win a title in 2009. They do have a special for him winning in either ’09 or ’10 at 9/4 odds. The number goes to 8/11 for years 2011 and beyond. For the pessimists, they have 7/2 odds Andy Murray will never win a Grand Slam title. Sky Bet has also put their 2 cents in on Federer’s chances of topping Sampras’ record, quoting 15/2 that the 2009 Wimbledon will break the record, 16/1 it happens at the French Open, 6/1 for the US Open and 4/9 that it’ll be in year 2010 or later. The firm is also offering a 9/2 bet Sampras keeps his record. It is agreed that his lacking performance at Flushing Meadow diminished Murray’s chances of winning BBC’s Personality of the year award. Rebecca Adlington remains a strong favourite, with 11/10 odds and Chris Hoy following at 7/4. Murray’s chances have dropped to 25/1. “Although Andy Murray has enjoyed a terrific season, we reckon he needed to win at Flushing Meadows to have any real chance of winning the BBC award, and now it looks as if only Lewis Hamilton can prevent the title going to a member of Team GB,” said Sky Bet’s Stevens.
