Football4Profit: News- Injuries

Seattle Mariners have decided to place Carlos Silva on the DL in order to give his elbow a chance to heal before putting the starting pitcher back in rotation. He’s been placed on the 15-day, and was put into effect following the game against his old employer, Minnesota. The game resulted in 9 hits against Silba, and nine runs in 3 1-3 innings. The tendonitis in his elbow may be a contributing factor to his failing performances in recent months, as his record dropped to 4-14, and a 6.36 ERA. Since April 17th, he’s managed to win only one game under his four year, $48 million contract with the Mariners.

Carlos Lee will not be playing for anywhere from six to eight weeks as he heals from surgery on his broken left little finger. The Astros’ outfielder was hit by a pitch in Cincinnati and suffered multiple fractures as a result. Previous to his injury, he was at the forefront of the National League with 100 RBI’s in 115 games, and had 28 home runs under his belt. He was hitting .314.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are going to play out the rest of the season without second baseman Orlando Hudson. The player has opted to undergo surgery to repair a dislocated bone in his left wrist. His placement on the 15-day disabled list followed Edgar Gonzalez’s (the right-handed pitcher, also for the Diamondbacks) move to the 60-day list. Hudson’s injury occurred during a wild play during the sixth inning of their game against the Atlanta Braves. He has an average of .305 over 107 games, and has 8 home runs for the same time period.

Manchester’s game against Newcastle United on Sunday resulted in midfielder Michael Carrick sustaining an ankle injury severe enough to put him out of commission for two to three weeks. The 27-year old was pulled off the field about 25 minutes into the game which both looked unlucky for United’s new reign as champions, and resulted in a 1-1 draw between the clubs. Carrick was not the only casualty, as Ryan Giggs suffered damage to his hamstring, and Argentina striker Carlos Tevez was unable to play in the Premier League Opening due to a death in the family. Last season’s star, Cristiano Ronaldo, will be unable to play until October.

Manchester City’s luck turned for the worse again this week when striker Valeri Bojinov was injured again. The 22-year old has hurt his Achilles tendon, and faces possibly another long-term on the disabled list. The damage was done immediately prior to Sunday’s season opener against Aston Villa, when the player hurt himself during warm-ups. The injury could put Bojinov out of commission for up to six months. He joined the team last season as one of eight preseason transfers made by manager Sven-Goran Erikkson. He was not able to play much for Manchester City, however, because in his third game the Bulgarian international suffered an injury to a knee ligament and was unable to continue with the season.
Valencia will have to do without Spain defender Carlos Marchena for the Spanish Supercup. The 29-year old will be unable to play any games in the next two to three weeks due to an ankle injury on his right side. The Supercup match, of which Marchena will miss both parts of, is set against Primera Liga champion Real Madrid on August 17th and 24th. The player will be missed as he contributed to Spain’s triumph during June’s European Championship. There is also the possibility that he will be out of Valencia’s opening game in the Primera Division against Mallorca.

Lyon will be without 25-year old Francois Clerc for anywhere from five to six months, since the France defender was injured recently. Clerc ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee just 27 minutes into Lyon’s opening Ligue 1 game last weekend. The knee injury comes as a heavy blow early on in the season for the player, who played for France for Euro2008. The game did end in favor of Lyon, with a final score of 3-0 against Toulouse.

This week is certainly a heavy one for injuries, as would agree Italian Serie A team Juventus- who lost two players to identical injuries while training over the weekend. Both midfielders Marco Marchionni and Cristiano Zanetti tore muscles in their right thighs on Sunday. Both the 28-year old and the 31-year old, respectively, will be sitting out on Juventus’ UEFA Champions’ League third qualifying round (playing against Artmedia Pertrzalka) and August 31st’s Serie A match against Fiorentina. The two injuries compound the loss of Dario Knezevic, who may still be out for the qualifying round with his knee injury.

Friday marks the return of Wayne Rooney from his bout with a virus he contracted while in Nigeria for a preseason game. Managers and the medical team for the club are hoping the remainder of time he’ll have before the regular season begins will be enough. "We've got a big job to do to get (Rooney) ready for next week," manager Alex Ferguson said. "With seven or eight days training we might make it. He is doing much better, the medical reports are good and we feel that he's clear of the virus."

German champions Bavern Munich has lost yet another player to the injured list this Tuesday when defender Martin Demichelis hurt his leg. The injury occurred during a friendly game against Inter Milan. Within 22 minutes into the game, the Argentinean international had to leave the field. The 27-year old is looking at about a month out of the game, to the dismay of his manager and coach. The game itself ended in a 1-0 loss for Bavern Munich. Demichelis will be joining players Willy Sangol, Franck Ribery, Hans-Jorg Butt and Luca Toni on the injured list. For players coming off the list to come back to training for the new season, Tim Borowski is returning from his summer recruitment and a bout with some mild knee difficulty.

Lower back spasms took Detroit Tigers’ Carlos Guillen out of the game Friday night. The third baseman was able to play through seven innings against the Oakland Athletics, before taking his leave. He entered the field with a .286, nine home runs, and 53 RBI’s. Before he had to leave the game, he was 1-for-3, which augmented his hitting streak to six games. He is currently listed as “day-to-day” for his recovery time.

Evan Longoria was unable to play in Friday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners because of a hand acquired Thursday night. The Tampa Bay third baseman suffered a bruised hand after being hit on the bottom of his right hand by a fast ball, thrown by JJ Putz, closer for Seattle. After being slammed, the player was quoted as saying that he didn’t expect to miss any time, but during warm-up three hours before the Friday night meeting, he found it was more painful than expected when trying to swing a bat. Joe Maddon, manager for the team, has said it’s “possible” Longoria will be back into play for Saturday’s game.

November marks for Croatia striker Eduardo da Silva the end of his term on the disabled list, as he continues his rehabilitation from a serious ankle injury. The accident occurred in February resulting in an open dislocation of the ankle joint, and a fracture to the left fibula at Birmingham. Though team Arsenal was looking to have da Silva back by September, it seems more likely that November will find the player sufficiently healed to play again, said manager Arsene Wenger. In the meantime, Jack Wilshere impressed during the preseason as the 16-year old was invited to play on the first team squad for the regular season.

Seems that Wayne Rooney has managed to contract a virus that may take him out of the running to start out the Premier season for Manchester United, during a recent pre-season tour of Nigeria. Most likely, the England striker will miss out on Sunday’s FA Community match where they are scheduled to play against Portsmouth. August 17th marks the team’s opening game against Newcastle United for the start of the Premier league season, and team doctors are unsure yet of his chances of recovering from the disease by that time. United is also playing the first two months of the season without Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo. He is sitting out injured for the duration. Sir Alex Ferguson, manager for the team, has assured the industry that Ronaldo is sure to play in Manchester this season. Real Madrid has been reported as offering up a world record transfer fee for Ronaldo; but as it wasn’t taken, they’ve since transferred in Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart. It may be seen as an abandonment of interest for the team for Ronaldo.
