Football4Profit: News- Injuries

Liverpool is going up against Standard Liege for next week’s UEFA Champions League qualifier, possibly without captain Steve Gerrard. Gerrard’s recent groin injury seemed to give him additional trouble this past Tuesday during the friendly game against Valerenga; resulting in his limping off the field during the first period of the 4-1 win. Rafa Benitez reported to media that, “We need to wait, but it could be one week.” Liverpool went onto continue their pre-season winning streak to encompass seven games, after Oslo.

The Kansas City Royals have lost Jose Guillen due to his resuffering a groin injury on Saturday in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The damage to his left groin left him out of the game Sunday, but according to manager Trey Hillman, the injury doesn’t seem to be bad enough to put Guillen on the disabled list. Although the player hasn’t had a home run since June 23, he is still a valuable asset to the team, providing 13 home runs and 67 RBI’s.

Barry Ferguson, captain for the Rangers, will be out of commission for three months due to an ankle injury, previously thought only minor. At the end of last season, the midfielder was having difficulty with the pain, but was told that it did not require surgery to correct. Unfortunately, the suffering was rekindled during training last week for the 30-year old, and further examination of the joint confirmed the extent of the damage. Important dates for the team that Ferguson will miss playing include two qualifying rounds for the UEFA Champions League group stage, and the beginning of Scotland’s World Cup qualifying stage.

Manuel Neuer, goalkeeper for Schalke, will miss the beginning of the Bundesliga season next month due to surgery for his broken foot. The player, who has played every match for the club since November of 2006, was hurt during a pre-season friendly against Erkenschwick on Tuesday. He was also the sole defender at last years UEFA Champion’s League quarterfinals, but the team is hopeful that he won’t be out too long, if all goes according to plan. “If the healing process goes well, Neuer will be able to play again at the beginning of September,” team doctors said.

Spartak Moscow’s UEFA Champion’s League will be missing Aleksandr Pavlenko for the third qualifying round tie, due to the midfielder’s bladder condition. It has been reported the player will be out for as great a time as a month, as he recovers from the hospital treatment necessary to treat the complaint. The 23-year old has scored 3 goals in 9 starts, and has only missed one league game this season so far.

Aston Villa’s defender Wilfred Bouma will be out of play due to an ankle injury. During Saturday’s game against Odense for an Intertott Cup match, Bouma severly dislocated his ankle, an injury that was much like the one that took Arsenal striker Eduardo out of the game for nine months earlier this year. Though his team went on the win the game 1-0, they felt the loss deeply. “It was a horrific incident and when I saw the injury, I was close to tears,” commented teammate Nigel Reo-Coker. It is unknown when an estimated return date will be available. For now, Aston Villa has acquired Brad Friedel, previously a goalkeeper for the United States, from their rival the Blackburn Rovers. He has reportedly signed a three-year contract, earning the 37 year old €2.5m. The move was made just one day following a deal signed between Blackburn and Paul Robinson, previously a goalkeeper for England, recently received from Tottenham. Friedel will be taking Scott Carson’s place, who was playing with the club on loan from Liverpool; he has now signed with West Bromwich Albion.

Jose Bosingwa’s selection and signing to New Chelsea has been somewhat undermined by his injury last week. The 25-year old will miss the start of the Premier League season due to a torn thigh muscle that occurred 20 minutes into his playtime at the friendly against Guangzhou Pharmaceutical. The defender, worth €20m to the team, will be out for a minimum of three weeks. He is, however, expected to be the first choice right-back this season for Stamford Bridge.

Schalke could suffer for Neuer’s injury
Manuel Neuer’s surgery for his broken foot will result in his missing the beginning of the Bunddesliga season this August. The injury occurred during a pre-season friendly, though the team doctors predict he should be healed well enough to begin playing again in September if all goes well. The 22-year old goalkeeper has played every match since November of 006 for Schalke, as well as for last year’s UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

End of season for Kelvim Escobar
Los Angeles Angels will lose Kelvim Escobar for the remainder of the season, following his decision to have surgery. The right-handed pitcher has been playing with a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder since March, but was hoping he’d heal with rest and rehab. His decision to have surgery to correct the injury was made after having consulted with the team doctors and a shoulder specialist in New York. Escobar, 32, won 18 games last season for the team, and will be unable to play again until at least 9 to 12 months have passed.

Dumatrait moved to Disabled, Herrera recalled
The Pittsburgh Pirates have moved Phil Dumatrait on the Fifteen Day Disabled List because of his aching shoulder. The left-hander’s move is retroactive to Monday, his having been placed on the list June 22 as well. When his shoulder didn’t improve after playing on Wednesday, the team decided to replace him back on the DL. In his place, the Pirates recalled Yoslan Herrera to play against the Cardinals. The Double-A pitcher played for the Cuban National Team from 2001- 2004, and stands as one of the few pitching prospects for the Pirates. Before the 2007 season began, he had signed a three year $1.92 million contract, but has remained in the minors for the first 1 ½ years of his term.
