Football4Profit: News- Boxing: Amir Khan

Amir Khan will be seen by the world in a new way for the first time this weekend as his pay-per-view contract finally kicks off in a boxing match against Colombian Breidis Prescott. The meeting takes place at the MEN Arena and can be viewed on Sky TV. Some expect the fight to be a relatively good measure of Khan, and a good indicator as to whether his skills merit a spot on pay-per-view. What’s sure of the event is that it’ll be entertaining at the very least- as the Bolton man and the undefeated [19-0 (17)] Colombian clash in the ring.

Much of the audience may well put their money in Khan’s corner as he is currently redeemed as one of the best up and comers in the industry. Three of the four governing bodies for the lightweight division (the exclusion being the WBA) have him in their top 10 lists. He seems to be on a roll- he’s accrued 18 wins in a row, with 14 of them early, as he creeps towards his goal of a world title. On this quest to the top, its to his benefit to beat men like Prescott, who keeps great scores and numbers but doesn’t have a determinable fan base, nor a well developed self image. Prescott stands as an excellent foe for Khan as he’s beaten all of his opponents, and only two managed to stay up outside schedule. Hopefully his numbers stand up in the ring despite the fact that only 6 of those vanquished have met him with a winning record under their belt. An additional disadvantage could be that this is only Prescott’s third fight not in his home country; for his sake, we hope he travels well. The bookmakers seem to be of an opinion he won’t put up much of a fight for energized Khan, who’s listed at 1/40 to win with most bookies.

Though we agree that Khan will probably come out on top, it’s surprising to see such high odds on a fighter who was dropped by Michael Gomez his last match. He did stick it out, and finished the career super featherweight with a flourish in the 5th, but the fact remains that he’s obviously not invincible. Sky TV’s demonstration should make a good display as to whether or not new trainer Jorge Rubio has made any improvements in Amir’s defense technique.
