Football4Profit: News- Olympics
William Hill is predicting that Team Great Britain will only better their performance for the London Games in 2012. The nation finished ahead of sports rivals Australia and Germany with a total of 19 Gold medals, fourth in the world at the Beijing medals table. Bookmaker William Hill has Great Britain at 7/4 odds that they’ll best their ranking to finish third at the next Summer Olympics. This year’s performance marked their best efforts in more than a century. Nineteen year old Rebecca Adlington was at the head of the pack, earning medals in the 400 metre and 800 metre freestyle double at the swimming arena. Chris Hoy and his fellow teammates in track cycling took away 7 of a possible 10 wins at the Velodrome. Hill is currently offering odds of 6/4 that Team Great Britains will earn no more than 19 gold medals during their home Games, while chances that they’ll grab 20 or more sit at 1/2.
For the total medal count, bookies have up that the country will bring home 50 or more with ¼ odds and 11/4 if they only achieve 49 or less. The Beijing Games granted the Brits 47 gold medals. Fellow bookie Ladbrokes have offered odds of 4/7 that Britain will top their total medal earning in 2008 when the Olympics begin in London. Spokesperson Robin Hutchinson has said, “The achievements this time round have been incredible, but we reckon they'll do even better next time round in front of a patriotic crowd.” Ladbrokes has also published a guesstimation on how much money the Olympics will generate in the gambling industry, predicting as much as £50 million could be bet on the 2012 events. Hill agrees, considering the £25 million that was bet on this year’s events. Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said, “People who had never had a bet before were sprinting into our shops to back Team GB in the Olympics - we took bets of up to £40,000 a time.”
Ladbrokes, a firm based out of Harlow, also has some interesting punts available for leaders of the Team Great Britain’s success: for example, they’ve quoted Shenaze Reade at 5/1 for BMX events, and teenage diver Tom Daley at 4/1. Others include Rebecca Adlington who is only 6/4 to win again, and Phillips Idowu to outdo himself in the triple jump at odds of 10/1. Specials include the most likely choice to light the Olympicflame in 2012, with the favourite spot falling to rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave at 4/5 odds.
