Football4Profit: News- World Cup 9/8/08

As games start gearing teams up for the 2010 World Cup, pressure is inevitably beginning to apply to those teams who may struggle at the start of the season. Each bad play pushes them further from the ultimate goal for European teams. French coach Raymond Domenech, for example, is having a difficult time bouncing back from an embarrassing loss by Austria with the opponents taking home the victory with a strong 3-1 score. It is certainly not the way Domenech wanted to start the season off, especially considering his humiliating departure from the European Championships. Against popular opion, July marked his second chance when the French Football Association voted to keep him on. Amazingly, as if they were trying, France has managed to avoid a win since October of 2007, when they defeated Lithuania 2-0. The team is set to meet up with Serbia this week, and unless they can pull off a victory, Domenech’s second chance may be swiftly executed.

Italy is not faring much better, though their troubles are stemming from injury rather than from poor leadership. The team’s World Cup qualifier against Georgia will be without midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, following the Milan player’s injury to his wrist. Lyon’s Fabio Grosso is out as well, having broken two ribs during this week’s Group 8 opener. Allessandro Gamberini is  injured for the Fiorentina club, having sustained an injury to his shoulder. Their coach, Marcello Lippi, has yet to announce who will replace them, if anyone.
