Gloucestershire should be proud of themselves after they defeated Somerset on Saturday. Using the Duckworth-Lewis method, Glos became the victor by 12 runs, despite centuries scored by Somerset’s Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter. Trescothick and wicketkeeper Kieswetter shared a second wicket stand of 302 as Somerset reached 333-4.
Even though Somerset was hungry for the win, Gloucestershire exploded out of the blocks with a 236-3 from only 28 overs. This is where the rain began to pour. Somerset’s Trescothick and Kieswetter set a record for the amount of wickets in the 40 over competition. Trescothick personally made a career best by reaching his century in just the 24th over, astounding many as he has recently announced his retirement from Cricket. Kieswetter was close on the heels of Trescothick in making his century. Sad to say that both Somerset players fell victim to Gloucestershire’s Steve Kirby with the score on 322. It happened simply and almost easily as Kieswetter was caught at cover. He had hit nine fours and five sixes off 107 balls. Trescothick was a bitter sweet story in having accomplished a career best one day score, coming off 112 deliveries which included an amazing 20 fours and six sixes.
Hamish Marshall and Kadeer Ali bolted to 89 in the ninth over as the Gladiators incited an overwhelming response to Somerset’s achievements. Mark Hardinges hit consecutive sixes into the Botham Stand off Arul Suppiah, in the 18th over. All this became an upset as Kadeer was to be run out by a smart return from midwicket by Wes Durston.
Just before the rain arrived, there was a 214 for two after 25 overs as the Gladiators were 24 runs ahead of Somerset’s total. It seemed like they were on their way home with the win. Even when Justin Langer ran out Craig Spearman with a direct hit from midwicket the margin of defeat was certainly lessened, however it was not enough to beat the Glos.
Middlesex put up an interesting fight against Leicestershire. Dawid Malan hit a bold 61 not out to assist Middlesex in achieving a draw in the LV County Championship Division Two clash.
After the first innings at Lord’s, HD Ackerman and Joshua Cobb helped the visitors lead of 166 with their grand 270 run. Claude Henderson, who is a left arm spinner, took the opportunity to take three quick Middlesex wickets to leave the hosts in a troubling situation on 73-4. When threatened like this Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan took it upon themselves to keep the home team safe. They teamed up to create a very important 71 run which lasted 16 overs after tea. Morgan was the forward defensive and edged Henderson to wicketkeeper Paul Nixon for 27.
There was a chance for Skipper Nixon to claim a win by putting himself on to bowl, but since the game was called 20 minutes early, due to the energy lacking and fizzling out after tea, a draw was called. Leicestershire had begun the day on 475-5 but slumped to 533 all out as Middlesex tore through their middle and lower order before lunch.
